General Information
Timing
Standard medical practice is to measure the length of a pregnancy as weeks from the first day of the last period, not from the date of conception. We perform abortions from the moment that a woman has a positive pregnancy test to approximately 23 weeks from the first day of the last normal period.
An ultrasound exam is performed in all cases to confirm and/or determine the length of gestation.
Preparation
We request that a patient not eat heavily for several hours prior to her appointment, as nausea during the procedure and immediately afterwards is not uncommon.
We recommend that the patient have a friend drive her home, or use public transportation. Most women are able to return to normal activity the following day.
Pain Management
Included in the cost of the procedure
is an optional intravenous injection of two medications (usually Fentanyl and Versed) that is very effective
in minimizing pain and relieving anxiety during and after the procedure.
We also make every effort to provide a relaxed, comfortable and supportive environment for our patients. We allow a support person to remain with the patient at all times.
In our experience this approach allows all of our patients to tolerate the discomfort involved in having an abortion. We think that general anesthesia is unnecessary and increases the risk, cost, and recovery time of the procedure.
