Surgical Abortion
Early Surgical Abortion with Manual Vacuum Aspiration (prior to 10 weeks)
The manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) technique is an extremely safe and effective way to terminate an early pregnancy. A hand-held plastic syringe is used to evacuate the pregnancy tissue from the uterus. The procedure is quiet, quick, and minimally invasive. The patient makes a rapid recovery. Unpleasant pregnancy symptoms, in particular nausea, are gone by the next day.
We feel that this option, combined with our pain management approach, offers the
safest, quickest and least painful method for ending an early pregnancy.
Surgical Abortion (10-13 weeks)
Prior to 13 weeks from the last period, only one visit is required to perform the abortion.
Following an ultrasound and explanation of the procedure, the cervical canal is dilated and a thin
plastic tube is passed through the cervix into the uterine cavity.
Pregnancy tissue is removed through the tube by a suction machine. The entire procedure takes less than 10
minutes.
Second Trimester Abortion (13-23 weeks)
Between 13 and 23 weeks, two visits are required to perform the procedure. At the first visit, laminaria (thin sticks of seaweed) are placed in the cervix, where they absorb fluid and expand, causing a slow and gradual dilation of the cervix. At the second visit, either later that day or the next day, the laminaria are removed and the pregnancy tissue is evacuated with a suction tube and/or with other instruments.
