General Information

General Information Timing
Standard medical practice is to measure the length of a pregnancy as weeks from the first day of the last period, not from the date of conception. Therefore, a woman is considered to be already two weeks pregnant on the date of conception. This timeline is a standard calculation used by all clinics, obstetricians and ultrasound doctors. We perform abortions from the moment that a woman has a positive pregnancy test to approximately 23 weeks from the first day of the last normal period. In every situation, we perform an ultrasound exam to confirm and/or determine the length of gestation.

How to Prepare
We ask that you not eat heavily for several hours prior to the appointment, as nausea during the procedure and immediately afterwards is not uncommon.

If you receive IV medication during the procedure, we require you to avoid driving immediately afterward. Most women are able to return to normal activity the following day.

Pain Management
Pain and discomfort is an area where the experience, expertise and surgical technique of the provider make a big difference. Dr. Bours makes a top priority of minimizing the pain and discomfort of the procedure. As a part of this effort we:
  • provide a comfortable, relaxed and supportive setting
  • seek to establish a trusting relationship between our patient, the medical assistant who is with the patient for all steps of the process, and Dr. Bours
  • allow a friend of the patient to remain with her throughout the process
  • offer an intravenous injection of two medications. We use Fentanyl®, a fast acting narcotic, and Versed®, an anti-anxiety drug in the Valium® family. This combination is very effective in minimizing pain and anxiety during and after the procedure. The cost of the pain management medication is included in the cost of the procedure.
All of our surgical abortions include superior pain management techniques and are performed in a comfortable, supportive setting.
