13 Through 23 Weeks (Second Trimester)

13 Through 23 Weeks (Second Trimester) Abortions between 13 and 23 weeks since the last period require two visits to our clinic. Abortions in weeks 22 or 23 require three visits.

At the first visit, laminaria, which are thin sticks of seaweed, are placed in the cervix. They absorb fluid and expand, causing a slow and gradual dilation of the cervix.

At the second visit later that day or the next day, the laminaria are removed and the pregnancy tissue is evacuated with a suction tube and/or with other instruments.

If we determine that the patient is 22-23 weeks pregnant, the laminaria are used for two days and the procedure is done on the third day.
