The Vasectomy Procedure
Vasectomy in general is a safe, simple procedure with few complications. Bours Health Center uses the no-scalpel technique, which is even safer because it is gentler on the tissue.
The Procedure After numbing the area, Dr. Bours uses a special instrument to make a single small incision in the midline of the scrotum, through which each of the vas deferens is in turn lifted out and cut. The downstream end of each vas deferen duct is cauterized. The upstream, or testicular, end of the duct is left open; hence, the term ‘open vasectomy’. No sutures are required to close the tiny wound. Success Rates The vasectomy has a failure rate of less than 1%. Vasectomy cannot be considered effective until a semen specimen has been examined microscopically, usually 4-6 weeks following the procedure, and found to be free of sperm. While there is a 60% success rate in reversing vasectomies, we recommend vasectomy only for men seeking permanent birth control. After Care The most common complication of vasectomy is a scrotal hematoma caused by bleeding into the scrotum in the immediate period following the surgery. This complication is best avoided by inactivity, relaxation and ice packs for the first 12 hours after the procedure. More questions?
